The first aid treatment for persons suffering from Dysentery Body Flux is by maintaining the Body Fluids by Oral Re-hydration Therapy by giving solutions known as Oral Re-hydration Solution - ORS, which are formulated by the World Health Organization - WHO.
Children who may suffer from Dysentery may succumb to it if their Body Fluid amounts are not properly maintained. Many a times patients get better from Dysentery by having their Body Fluids maintained provided their immunity is very good.
But some times it happens that the person suffering from Dysentery also suffers from Vomiting and lots of profuse Diarrhea and for which the Body Fluids need to be given through the Veins, that is through the intravenous route and thus Hospital admission is needed.
As is recommended, Stool examination (examination of Feces) and Microbiological Microscopy should be done to correctly know the Dysentery causing Micro-Organism and accordingly, indicated and prescribed medicines should be administered to the Patient.
When such laboratory services are not available, as is incident in many of the Developing and under developed parts and countries of the world OR in case of emergencies in Dysentery cases, it becomes necessary to administer a combination of Medicines for treating Dysentery which include an Amoebicidal drug which kills and annihilates the Parasites if present and also an Antibiotic to treat any Bacterial infection which may be the cause of Dysentery.
Treatment for Dysentery caused by Shigella - Shigellosis
Dysentery may also be caused by Shigella. A severe condition of Dysentery with lot of blood in the stools and when caused by Shigella, is known as Shigellosis. If the infection by Shigella is not too severe, then the patient may be advised to continue on without medicines and to have the course of diarrhea finish up which is of less than a wee. Oral or intravenous administration of fluids are advised to cope up the loss of fluids.
If a severe Shigella infection is incident then various Antibiotics like Ciprofloxacin or Bactrim can be prescribed by the doctors. An unfortunate add on to the antibiotic medicines is the resistance which has been developed in the microbes thus resulting in the need of use of higher antibiotics which are often in less supply to the Developing and under developed countries.
Here comes the necessity of stocking of medicines by doctors especially for the more vulnerable group which are especially the pediatric age group people - the children and the Geriatric age group people - people with age more than 50.
Treatment for Bacillary Dysentery
When the Dysentery is more a type of Amoebic (Amebic) Dysentery, then it needs a two way attack on the parasites and which starts with a 10 day course of the Medicine Metronidazole. To complete the action of Metronidazole, the doctor may prescribe a Medicine Diloxanide Furoate which remains available only through Government Hospitals and Dispensaries like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - CDC in United States of America and NACO and Civil Hospitals in various parts of the world.
Other drugs which are useful for controlling Amebic Dysentery are Paramomycin and Iodoquinol.
