Eye twitching, medically termed as blepharospasm is the uncontrolled and intermittent contraction of the muscles surrounding the eye. In simple words, it is the involuntary spasms in the eye. The spasms in the eye can persist from a week up to many weeks. There are various causes that bring about the eye twitching.

• The stress may further lead to sleeplessness which is also responsible for the eye twitching. There is a strain that is caused in the eye due to these factors thus making grounds for the troubles and spasms in the eye.
• Immoderate consumption of coffee is also another one of the eye twitching causes. The presence of caffeine in coffee results in the trouble of eye twitch. Consuming excessive amounts of alcohol can also lead to eye twitching too.
• Sometimes the pollution in the air that has dust and grit can also cause blepharospasm after a short period of irritation in the eye.
• Smoking can also give rise to eye twitching. This is because the entry of a few harmful toxins causing an improper functioning of the muscles.
• A deficiency in the nutrients is also a possible cause for eye twitching. This is especially when there is a lack of mineral magnesium in the body.
• Another factor that is associated with the eye twitching is allergies. When the people with eye allergies suffer from swelling and itching along with watery eyes and rub the eyes, it can cause eye twitching.


Treatment measures for eye twitching
• Reduce the amount of stress that you are under. Keep yourself relaxed and abstain from straining you eyes too much. Do not watch television or work on the computer for long hours.
• To reduce the stress you can meditate every morning and breathe deeply. This reduces the stress thereby, the twitch in the eye.
• Reduce the intake of coffee and switch over to healthier drinks.
• To get over the nutrition deficiency that causes eye twitching you can eat bananas which are rich in potassium and zinc.
• Another eye twitching treatment which is also a blepharitis treatment is to place a slice of cucumber and place it on the eyes. This gives a cooling effect for the eyes thus curing the twitches in the eye.
• Make sure you get enough of sleep. A quality sleep is what determines the quality of your work and also keeps you away from all the possible health hazards.
• If the eye twitches for a longer period that is for more than a week it is important that you consult a doctor.
