Superbug Metallo-beta-lactamase Metallo-1

This article gives free health information on Causes Prevention Treatments of superbug NDM-1

A new health threat to humans has been discovered, a superbug called Metallo-beta-lactamase, in short M-1. It has been found that super bug M-1 is reacting negatively to antibiotics which normally cure such bugs. In short, antibiotics do not aid towards controlling the spread and total cure of this bug. At present this superbug has been given the name of NDM-1, mainly because one of the first patients to have been diagnosed it with was treated at a hospital in New Delhi (ND)& is supposedly to have caught the infection there.

What is Metallo-1?

Metallo-1 is a gene, meaning it is part of the organism which makes up cells within the body. This specific Metallo-1 gene is such that its presence in the body means the free movements of bacteria within the body because when antibiotics are administered to treat the bacteria, the MEtallo-1 bug does not allow the antibiotics to work.

Which antibiotics are not effective against Metallo-1?

Even the most powerful antibiotics have been found to be ineffective against superbug Metallo-1. These primarily are the carbapenem antibiotics. These antibiotics, in fact, are considered the ultimate solution to treating bacterial infections, such as E.coli and Klebsiella.

Examples of Carbapenem Drugs:
- Meropenem
- Imipenem
- Doripenem
- Ertapenem
- Biapenem
- Panipenem / betamipron
- Razupenem (also known simply as PZ-601)

Why is Metallo-1 dangerous?

Metallo-1 is considered dangerous because it means that free-moving unsafe bacteria will create infections in the body. Such infections may not be restrict themselves to one specific section of the body, but could spread. Even worse, it could be spread to other people.

What are the possible signs of the presence of Metallo-1?

It has been reported that those suffering from blood poisoning and urinary tract infections should undergo further checks for the presence of Metallo-1. Studies show that E. coli is the leading cause of urinary tract infections.

What are the possible causes of Metallo-1?

Research studies have shown the primary cause of Metallo-1 is likely due to poor hygienic conditions. Research studies claim that those who admit themselves to hospitals for undergoing cosmetic surgery are the most likely to catch the superbug Metallo-1.

What are the preventive measures against Metallo-1?

First and foremost, it is necessary to avoid getting treatment in hospitals in those areas which have reported the presence of Metallo-1 cases.
Secondly, whether or not you visit hospitals in infected areas, the best preventive measures against Metallo-1 is maintaining personal hygiene. What this means is that you need to keep your home and place of work clean.

So basically what you need to do for prevention of Metallo-1 is halting the spread of bacteria. Here's what you need to do:
1. Ensure that you wash your hands on a regular basis, such as after eating, on reaching home after travelling, after doing chores around the house (such as dusting, gardening, etc).
2. Remember to ensure that your children too wash their hands after coming into play. Do not leave younger kids unsupervised – they tend to taste anything & everything!
3. When cleaning bath tubs, the toilet bowl, kitchen platforms, wall tiles, flooring, etc. ensure that you use a good disinfectant. All these spots around your home are breeding grounds for E. coli.

Remember: Cleanliness is next to Godliness!
