Basics about Yoga

The origin of Ayurveda from nearly 5000 years back alos gave equal important to the practise of exercises and stances which were slow movements of the body with Meditation and Concentration practice.

The word Yoga is derived from a Sanskrit and Pali language derivation - योग / yóga which refers to the regulation of the bodily movements and also the Mental focus and concentration techniques which were mentioned by the age old saints from India and is having similar meanings in the culture of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Yoga also refers to one of the six orthodox schools in the Philosophy of Hinduism - āstika / Darshanas - the totality of the teachings of Yoga according to Jainism compose of Mental, Verbal and Physical Well Being.

Major Branches of Yoga
According to Hindu Philosophy, there are 5 majore branches of Yoga. There are

  • Rāja Yoga

  • Karma Yoga

  • Jnana Yoga

  • Bhakti Yoga

  • Hatha Yoga


  • Meaning of the word Yoga
    The word Yoga has several meanings which is derived from the word Yuj which means to Control or to Unite or to yoke. It thus means to Join, Unite, Conjunct and a mean for.

    A person who follows the disciplins of Yoga philosophy for the attainment of high levels, is known as a Yogi or a Yogini.
